More's legal principles were anchored in natural law, metaphysics and the moral principles of Christian revelation. These are the principles he defended courageously during his own lifetime and are, no doubt, what he would articulate today as being the only valid legal principles by which men should guide their moral behaviour if they are to remain true to their Christian faith.

The 27th Annual Dinner of the

St. Thomas More Society

The Saint Thomas More Society of the Diocese of Wilmington is pleased to announce that Victor F. Battaglia, Sr., Esq. will receive the Monsignor Paul J. Taggart St. Thomas More Award at the Society’s Annual Dinner.  Mr. Battaglia is a former President of the Delaware Bar Association.  He received the University of Delaware Medal of Distinction, the Outstanding State Chair Award from the American Bar Association, and the James H. Gilliam Award for his efforts on behalf of the American Heart Association.

 

      He has served on the Boards of the Delaware Chapter of the American Red Cross, the United Negro College Fund, the Delaware Art Museum, and Christiana Hospital.  Mr. Battaglia and his wife, Toni, are members of St. Joseph on the Brandywine Parish. He is a graduate of Salesianum School and the University of Delaware.

 

     The Annual Dinner will be held at the Wilmington Country Club, on Sunday, April 19, 2015.  Cocktails will begin at 5:00 p.m. (cash bar) and dinner at 6:00 p.m.  Tickets are $85.00 for members and $95.00 for non-members.  Tables of eight or twelve also may be purchased.

 

 

 

 

 

N.D. Professor to Speak

on May 21st – 1.5 Hours CLE Credit

The St. Thomas More Society and the Notre Dame Club of Delaware are pleased to welcome Professor Barry Cushman, as the 2015 Archbishop Edmond J. FitzMaurice Lecturer.

 

 

Professor Cushman is the John P. Murphy Foundation Professor of Law, as well as a concurrent Professor of Political Science and Professor of History.  He will present a lecture on “The Birth of Modern Family Law.”  Delaware attorneys will receive 1.5 hours of free continuing legal education.

     Dr. Cushman joined the University of Notre Dame faculty in 2012 after 15 years at the University of Virginia, where he was the James Monroe Distinguished Professor of Law and Professor of

 

History.  His area of scholarship covers constitutional law, political economy, and social reform movements in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  He is the author of Rethinking the New Deal Court: The Structure of a Constitutional Revolution, which won the American Historical Association's Littleton-Griswold Prize in American Law and Society. 

     The lecture will be held Thursday, May 21st at Salesianum School 1801 N Broom St, Wilmington,

DE 19802.  A light reception at 6:00 p.m. precedes the lecture, which is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. and

conclude by 8:30 p.m.  The lecture is free and open to the public.

New Attorney Social – June 4th, 2015 at Kelly’s Logan House

The Society will be hosting its 7th Annual New Attorney Social to welcome new attorneys to the Delaware Legal Community and to introduce them to the St. Thomas More Legal Society of the Diocese of Wilmington.  The event begins at 6:00 p.m.; it is free and open to men and women of all faiths. 

 

Red Mass – October 5th at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Church

The 29th Annual Red Mass, sponsored by the St. Thomas More Society, will be held at 6:00 P.M. on Monday, October 5, 2015 at St.  Joseph’s on the Brandywine Church, 10 Old Church Rd, Greenville, DE 19807. 

 

Monthly First Friday Mass

From September through June, on the First Friday of every month, the members of the St. Thomas More Society are invited to attend Mass and Breakfast at the Wilmington Club located at 1103 North Market Street, Wilmington.  Rev. Leonard Klein will celebrate Mass at 7:30 a.m. with breakfast to follow.  The breakfast ends promptly at 8:40 a.m. Cost for the breakfast is $27.50 per person.
