Snacking Can Be Nutritious!

No matter how young or old they are, you can help your child make healthier food choices that curb hunger throughout the day, provide energy and contribute to their daily intake of nutrients.

First …  Keep junk food out of the house!

If this is something your child has grown used to, it may not be easy, but if you don't keep them on hand they’ll have to settle for something that’s better for them. Set a good example by choosing healthy snacks yourself.

Grains are Grrrrreat!

Whole-grain foods — such as whole-grain pretzels or tortillas are high-fiber. Whole-grain cereals provide energy and curb hunger for longer periods of time.

Veggie & Fruit Fun!

Combine brightly colored veggies and fruits with tasty dips and let the fun begin!  For example present you child with a dish of baby carrots and other raw veggies with fat-free ranch dressing or hummus. A sweet treat idea might be to dip graham cracker sticks or fresh fruit in honey or fat-free yogurt.  Also try spreading peanut butter or low-fat chocolate spread on celery, apples, pineapples or bananas.

Don’t forget breakfast!

Start your child off in the morning with a balanced breakfast --- It’s still the most important meal of the day!
